California White Rabbit

Bred by George West in Lynwood, California in the 1920s by crossing Himalayan, Standard Chinchilla and New Zealand White rabbits, the Californian is a stocky, dense-furred white breed with dark Himalayan-pattern points on the nose, ears, feet and tail.

- Its compact build and calm temperament suit varied Kenyan smallholder settings, but like other white-coated breeds it needs shaded, well-ventilated hutches to cope with heat in hot lowland regions.

- Adults weigh 3.5-4.75kg; house in raised hutches (about 2.5 square feet per rabbit) with a separate nest box for kindling. Feed 120-150g/day of 16-18% protein pellets plus greens and hay. Litters average 6-10 kits, gestation is about 31 days, and does can rebreed roughly 4-6 weeks after kindling, allowing 4-5 litters a year. Kits typically reach 1.8-2.2kg market weight by 10-12 weeks. Good mothering ability and a favorable meat-to-bone ratio suit it well to slaughter production; routine deworming and dry bedding help control coccidiosis.

- Strong carcass quality and fast growth make the Californian one of the most recommended breeds for Kenyan commercial meat-rabbit units, often crossed with New Zealand White to boost hybrid vigor, litter size and output for sale to local butcheries and hotels.
