The Camborough is not a heritage breed but a commercial hybrid sow line developed by the Pig Improvement Company (PIC), combining Large White (Yorkshire) and Landrace genetics to maximize reproductive performance, growth rate and feed efficiency in crossbred offspring.

Care & Economics

Husbandry guide: Camborough sows are noted for very large litters, often 12-14 piglets born, combined with strong maternal instincts, good milk production and high piglet survival rates. Because they are a hybrid line, replacement gilts are typically purchased from a registered PIC distributor or agent rather than bred from farm stock, and they are usually mated to a terminal sire such as Duroc for finishing pigs. They convert feed efficiently, supporting good weight gain on standard commercial grower rations, and require the same vaccination (classical swine fever, erysipelas), deworming and African swine fever biosecurity protocols as other commercial lines. Farrowing crates and careful piglet management are recommended given the large litter sizes to reduce crushing losses.
Economic importance: Increasingly promoted in Kenya as a "gold standard" commercial sow, the Camborough's high prolificacy and feed efficiency let farmers raise more, faster-growing piglets per sow per year, with industry guides citing per-pig returns in the tens of thousands of Kenyan shillings for well-managed operations.
