Climate requirements
Tolerates a wide range, roughly 15-30C, and is more cold-tolerant than tilapia, making it viable in Kenya's cooler mid-altitude ponds in Central Kenya; it has also become an established invasive species in Lake Naivasha.

Husbandry

Care & Economics

Husbandry guide
Typically raised in earthen ponds in polyculture with tilapia, since carp forage on benthic invertebrates, detritus, and leftover feed rather than competing with tilapia in the water column. As a secondary bottom-feeder it is usually stocked as a smaller share of the mix, exploiting unused pond productivity and lifting overall yield without much extra feed cost. Carp respond well to organic and inorganic pond fertilization, which boosts the natural food they depend on, reducing reliance on commercial pellets. Periodic partial harvesting and bottom management help offset sediment disturbance from the carp's foraging habit.
Economic importance
Common carp plays a secondary but useful role in Kenyan aquaculture, mainly as a low-cost polyculture companion to tilapia that boosts total pond yield and farmer income without extra pond space or major additional feed input.
