Duroc Pig

Developed in the United States in the 1800s from the Old Duroc of New York and the Red Jersey of New Jersey, the Duroc is a large, muscular, golden-to-dark-red pig with partially drooping ears, known for hardiness and richly marbled meat.

Husbandry guide: Duroc sows produce somewhat smaller litters than Large White or Landrace, typically around 8-10 piglets, but growers are fast-gaining and efficient, commonly reaching market weight of about 90-100 kg within roughly 5-6 months. Ration formulation should emphasize energy and protein balance to support its rapid muscle growth, and pens need sturdy fencing and robust flooring given its size and active temperament. Standard health measures include deworming every three months, vaccination against classical swine fever and erysipelas, and monitoring for respiratory disease in group housing. Its main use in Kenya is as a terminal sire crossed onto Large White or Landrace sows to boost growth rate, feed efficiency and pork marbling in the finishing generation.
Economic importance: Duroc-cross pork commands a premium for its marbling and flavour, so many Kenyan commercial farms keep Duroc boars specifically to sire market-bound litters that fetch better prices from butcheries and processors.
