Flemish Giant Rabbit

Originating in the Flanders region of Belgium, possibly from 16th-century giant rabbit stock, the Flemish Giant is one of the largest domestic rabbit breeds, with a long semi-arched body, broad hindquarters, powerful legs and upright ears.

- Its large body mass and dense coat make it less heat-tolerant, so in Kenya it needs spacious, well-shaded, well-ventilated hutches, particularly in hot lowland areas, to avoid heat stress.

- Adults weigh 6-9kg and need larger hutches (4+ square feet per rabbit) with reinforced flooring to bear their weight. Feed 150-200g/day of 16% protein pellets plus hay, greens and roughage. Litters average 5-12 kits, occasionally more, gestation is about 31 days, and does need a longer recovery between litters than smaller breeds because of their size. Purebred Flemish Giants grow more slowly and carry more bone relative to meat than New Zealand White or Californian, so smallholders typically cross them with those breeds to combine large frame with a better meat-to-bone ratio and faster growth.

- Kenyan farmers value the Flemish Giant mainly as a crossbreeding sire to increase litter size, frame size and hybrid vigor in commercial meat lines, while its sheer bulk makes individual carcasses attractive for bulk or restaurant sales despite slower individual growth.
