Climate requirements
Performs well in Kenya's temperate highland pig-keeping zones (e.g. Central and Rift Valley); its light skin and lean cover mean it also benefits from shaded, well-ventilated housing and protection from direct sun and chilling drafts for piglets.

Husbandry

Care & Economics

Husbandry guide
Landrace sows are highly prolific, averaging 11-13 piglets per litter, with strong mothering ability, good milk yield and short rebreeding intervals that support two litters a year. Farmers should provide well-bedded farrowing pens to reduce chilling losses in young piglets, a grower ration reaching about 16-18% crude protein, and clean, dry group housing for weaners to limit respiratory disease. Routine deworming, iron injections for piglets, and vaccination against classical swine fever and erysipelas are standard practice. Because of its length and lean muscling it is most often used as the dam breed, crossed with Large White or Duroc boars rather than kept as a pure terminal breed.
Economic importance
Its exceptional litter size and mothering traits make the Landrace the breed of choice for building up herd numbers quickly, and its cross with Large White produces the prolific F1 hybrid sows favoured by Kenyan commercial piggeries.
