Nile perch is a large predatory freshwater fish native to the Nile and other African basins, introduced into Lake Victoria in the 1950s-60s, where it now dominates the commercial fishery and reshaped the lake's ecosystem.

Husbandry guide: Nile perch is overwhelmingly wild-caught by Lake Victoria's gillnet and longline fisheries rather than farmed. Cage aquaculture on the lake operates at real scale but is dominated by Nile tilapia, which is easier to manage and has stronger consumer demand; Nile perch cage culture remains largely experimental. Anyone attempting perch grow-out should note it is a slow-growing carnivore needing high-protein fishmeal-based feed and is prone to cannibalism at density, requiring careful size-grading, and reliable fingerling supply is not yet established in Kenya. In practice, most Kenyan "Nile perch" livelihoods are capture fishing and fileting/processing for export, not pond or cage grow-out.
Economic importance: Nile perch is one of Kenya's most valuable fishery products, historically generating major regional export revenue via filet exports; scarcity relative to peak-1990s catches has raised prices and interest in future aquaculture, but wild capture and processing remain the dominant livelihood for lakeside communities.
