Climate requirements
Originally bred to withstand cold, wet marshland, the breed also performs well in Kenya's cooler, higher-rainfall highland areas, tolerating damp pasture conditions better than most wool breeds.

Husbandry

Care & Economics

Husbandry guide
Well suited to rotational grazing on lush highland pasture; its black, disease-resistant hooves and above-average resistance to footrot and internal parasites reduce veterinary intervention compared with other wool breeds. Ewes are noted for good fertility and strong mothering/milking ability, commonly rearing twins on adequate pasture. Fleeces yield roughly 3.6-5.4kg of wool per shearing (once yearly) with a fine-for-longwool fiber diameter of about 31-38 microns, useful for both hand-spinning and commercial wool. Docile and easy to handle, the breed needs standard vaccination and hoof-care routines plus reliable water access (4-6 liters/day per adult) in wetter highland paddocks.
Economic importance
Suits Kenyan highland farmers seeking a dual wool-and-meat income stream, with its footrot and parasite resistance lowering health costs in higher-rainfall zones where other wool breeds struggle.
