Toggenburg Goat

Capra aegagrus hircus

A Swiss dairy breed originating in the Toggenburg valley, brought to Kenya for crossbreeding and upgrading of local goats; it has a gentle, quiet temperament and consistently good udder conformation. Mature males weigh 75-80 kg and females 50-65 kg.

Care & Economics

Husbandry guide: Performs well under intensive and semi-intensive zero-grazing systems typical of smallholder dairy farms, needing cut-and-carry napier grass, legume fodder and concentrate supplementation for sustained yields. Smallholder Kenyan does have recorded around 475 litres over a 201-day first lactation, with typical daily yields of 1-5 litres depending on management, and milk fat of 3-4%. Regular deworming, CCPP and PPR vaccination, and hoof trimming are standard health practices. Does typically kid once a year, often with twins, supporting steady replacement of the milking herd.
Economic importance: As one of the most widely promoted dairy goat breeds in Kenya's highland smallholder systems, Toggenburgs and their crosses provide a reliable household milk and income source where cow dairying is less accessible.
