African Fan Palm

A tall, solitary fan-leaved palm with notable stands along the Tana River delta and other riverine floodplains in Kenya. Trunks are often swollen mid-height and the wood is exceptionally hard.

Care guide: Low maintenance once established; young palms need protection from fire and livestock grazing during the vulnerable underground establishment phase.

Economic importance: Culturally and economically significant to Pokomo and other Tana River communities for wine-tapping and construction timber; wild populations are under pressure from upstream damming and land-use change.
