Climate requirements: Cool, wet montane forest at roughly 1,500-2,300m altitude with high rainfall of 1,500-2,500mm.

Planting guide: Propagated from seed, which germinates slowly and irregularly; used mainly in forest restoration plantings rather than open cultivation.
Care guide: Very slow-growing and shade-tolerant; wild stands were severely overharvested historically and now require strict protection from illegal logging.

Value

Uses & Economic Importance

Uses: Aromatic, durable, easily worked timber for furniture and joinery; historically also a source of camphor oil.
Economic importance: Severely depleted by intensive logging through the mid-20th century; now protected within gazetted forest reserves, with commercial harvesting effectively banned and wild populations considered threatened.
