A large evergreen conifer, one of relatively few gymnosperms native to tropical Africa, forming emergent canopy trees in East African montane forests. Historically one of Kenya's most heavily exploited indigenous softwoods.

Growing Conditions

Climate requirements: Cool montane forest zones at roughly 1,500-2,500m, with moderate to high rainfall (1,000-1,800mm); intolerant of hot, arid lowland conditions.
Soil types: Fertile, well-drained forest soils, often volcanic-derived.
Water requirements: Moderate; favors moist forest microclimates, often along riverine or mid-slope forest.

Planting & Care

Planting guide: Raised from seed in nursery beds and outplanted as seedlings in the rainy season; wide spacing (6-10m) needed given its large mature crown.
Care guide: Very slow-growing, so mainly used in long-term forest restoration rather than commercial plantations; young trees need protection from fire and grazing.
